Cork Pipers' Club Session at the Viscount

We had the first session of the term in The Viscount bar in Bishopstown a few weeks ago.  It turned out to be a great night as always and the new venue worked out well.  We should be back there at the end of the month so keep an eye out on the upcoming events on the sidebar or add your name to the mailing list at the top right of the page to get all the latest news straight to your inbox.  We hope to have a session on the last Thursday of every month but check back here for confirmation.  Anyway back to the session, the picture above shows Fearghal, Kevin and John (Mitchell).  John (Murphy) had the pipes …

Alex brought along his Galician pipes which certainly made an impression on everybody in the bar!  There’s a great big sound from these but unfortunately Alex is moving away from Cork soon so the next session will be the last one we see him at for a while.

See you at the next session!

Pipers at the Cork Folk Festival

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

This weekend sees a belated return of the Cork Folk Festival.  This year’s festival is being held about a month later so it brings to two the number of great festivals Cork has in October.

Cork Pipers’ Club concert is on tomorrow (October 3rd) upstairs in the Spailpin at 4pm.  There are a whole host of pipers playing there so it promises to be a fine feast of piping. The full line-up is Jimmy Morrison, John Byrne, Diarmuid Granger, Donal Ó Caoimh, Kevin Moore, Dan O’Callaghan, Donncha and Diarmuid Moynihan, and Cork’s gentleman piper Tomás Ó Canainn.

Tonight also sees the launch of an album by the aforementioned Cork piper Diarmuid Moynihan with his brother Donncha on guitar also in the Spailpin.  I look forward to getting my hands on ‘The Lights of Ranzico’ and will report back here on it.  Galician piper Anxo Lorenzo will also be in attendance and I hear a bunch of Celta de Vigo supporters will be present as Anxo is from a town nearby.

The Cork Folk Festival weekend promises to be a great trad weekend in Cork.  It’s just a pity we don’t have it more often than once a year!  There are plenty of sessions on in the pubs around Cork so keep an ear open for them.

Update: The night was a great success and we will be posting some video and mp3s from the evening in the coming week.  If you were there and you have some photos or video, we would appreciate if you could send them (or their links) onto us here by email to donal @ corkpipersclub.com.

Cillian Vallely and Kevin Crawford in Cork

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Lunasa piper Cillian Vallely is dropping in on Cork tomorrow night, June 15, along with Kevin Crawford on flute.  They are playing in An Cruibin, formerly the legendary Lobby Bar, starting at 8pm according to their MySpace but I’d imagine they’ll be starting at 9.  I will update tomorrow after checking with the venue.

** Update **

I got my ticket at lunchtime and it says doors at 8.30pm so I’d imagine it starts at 9pm.

Photos from the Christmas Session in the Outpost

Friday, December 26th, 2008

The Cork Pipers Club had our Christmas session in the Outpost earlier on in December.  It was a fitting end to the classes this year and the Outpost came up trumps with a fine plate of sandwiches.  We hope to have sessions on a more regular basis so watch this space for more information on the next one.

The next term of classes will begin in Wilton SMA Hall on January 15h with enrolment taking place the week before in the SMA Hall on January 7th.  More info will be posted here closer to the date.

Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas and Happy New Year!

Christmas Session in the Outpost

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

The Cork Pipers Club Christmas session is taking place tomorrow night (Thursday December 11th) in The Outpost bar on Curraheen Road in Bishopstown.  This is to mark the final classes of the term so bring along your pipes.  Other musicians are more than welcome so that we don’t have a plethora of pipers!

We hope to get things kicked off shortly after 9pm when the second class finishes.
